Hyperpigmentation & Sun Damage Treatments in Westminster

Colorado sunshine can be beautiful, but it can also be hard on your skin. Over time, sun exposure, altitude, and dry air may contribute to dark spots, redness, uneven tone, and a dull complexion. At Dimensions Eye & Aesthetics, we help you build a thoughtful skin plan designed to refresh your complexion and support a clearer, brighter look. Depending on your needs, your provider may recommend IPL Photofacial, chemical peels, PRX, exfoliating treatments, or medical-grade skin care products.

Treatments that may help

  • IPL Photofacial
    • Best for redness, sun spots, and uneven tone. An IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photofacial reverses sun damage and hyperpigmentation by using broad-spectrum light to target excess melanin. The light heats the dark pigment, breaking up clusters so the body can shed them naturally, resulting in a clearer, even skin tone. The device penetrates the skin and is selectively absorbed by melanin in sunspots, age spots, and freckles. Over 1-2 weeks, these fragmented pigment particles rise to the skin's surface and flake or slough off as the skin renews. The light also targets hemoglobin in broken capillaries and visible blood vessels, closing them off to reduce facial redness and rosacea. The thermal energy stimulates natural collagen production, improving skin texture, elasticity, and fine lines.
  • Chemical Peels
    • Best for dullness, uneven surface tone, and light exfoliation. AHA/BHA chemical peels treat hyperpigmentation and sun damage by breaking bonds between dead, pigment-heavy skin cells on the surface. This accelerates cell turnover, shedding dark spots and sun-damaged skin while promoting a fresh, even complexion. AHAs (such as glycolic and lactic acid) are water-soluble and work on the skin's outermost layer. They dissolve the glue holding dead, pigmented cells together, sloughing away surface discoloration, age spots, and sun spots. BHAs (such as salicylic acid) are oil-soluble, penetrating deep into pores to break down excess sebum and debris. Paired in a peel, BHAs clear congestion that causes breakouts, while AHAs fade the resulting dark marks.
  • PRX
    • Best for patients wanting a brighter, smoother-looking skin treatment plan. PRX treats hyperpigmentation and sun damage with a blend of Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA), Kojic Acid, and hydrogen peroxide. Kojic Acid is a brightening agent that inhibits melanin production, fading dark spots and melasma. Hydrogen peroxide delivers active ingredients deep into the skin while neutralizing surface irritation, providing chemical peel benefits without peeling. Unlike traditional peels or laser treatments, PRX causes minimal or no peeling or sun sensitivity, making it convenient year-round.
  • Microdermabrasion
    • Best for surface buildup, dull texture, and a polished glow. Microdermabrasion mechanically exfoliates to buff away hyperpigmented skin and dead skin cells. This increases cell turnover, allowing healthier, even-toned skin to surface while boosting collagen to restore firmness and smoothness. The combination of gentle abrasion and vacuum suction promotes circulation and fibroblast production. This collagen boost helps heal photodamaged skin and degrades built-up melanosomes beneath the surface. As a minimally invasive treatment, fading dark spots is gradual and requires multiple steps. Most specialists recommend 5-10 sessions spaced a few weeks apart. Exfoliated skin is vulnerable to UV rays. Daily use of broad-spectrum SPF is mandatory to prevent dark spots from returning or worsening.
